What should you do when you find a protected animal in distress

Date 24.07.2024
Time 5 minutes

Found a protected animal in distress? Report immediately to NTM-FEE Malta (9999 9505) or to ERA by telephone (22923500) or through ERA’s Customer Assistance System.

Malta’s rich biodiversity is a testament to the island’s natural heritage, and protecting its diverse array of species is a collective responsibility. In view of this, the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) is supporting and co-financing a project aimed at the restoration and rehabilitation of protected wild animals. ERA indeed collaborates and provides support to Nature Trust-FEE Malta (NTM), both in terms of treatment and veterinary care, and the subsequent rehabilitation around the Maltese Islands.

In 2023 alone, NTM received an impressive 700 reports from the public regarding wildlife in need of assistance. This overwhelming response highlights the community’s commitment to safeguarding the island’s fauna.

Among the reported cases, hedgehogs emerged as the most frequently encountered species, followed closely by marine turtles. However, the list of animals in distress extended to a diverse range, including skinks, snakes, bats, chameleons, lizards, geckos, shrews and even cetaceans such as dolphins. While some of these animals were found deceased, the majority were successfully rescued and underwent rehabilitation before being released back into their natural habitats.

The successful rehabilitation and release of these animals would not have been possible without the vigilance and swift action of concerned citizens. By promptly reporting sightings of wildlife in distress, members of the public played a crucial role in ensuring these creatures received the necessary care and support.

Nature Trust Malta’s Wildlife Rescue Team, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of distressed animals, has been at the forefront of these efforts. Their tireless work, combined with the financial support from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), has made a significant impact on the preservation of Malta’s diverse wildlife. The public is encouraged to immediately report of any observations of distressed animals directly to NTM-FEE Malta or ERA over the phone (22923500) or through ERA’s customer care system.
