The Department of Public Works has made extensive investment on its central building to reduce carbon emissions into the environment to meet targets set by the EU.
The works on the building consisted of the fitting of outdoor insulation boards. Strong slabs have also been attached to an aluminium structure on the façade of the building, to have a ventilated cavity, which through air circulation protects the building from moisture accumulation and condensation.
The apertures were all made of aluminum called thermal break with double-glazing glass. The skylight was also manufactured by this type of glass in order to reduce the amount of heat lost and to light the building with natural light.
The existing screed has been removed to lay an insulation layer underneath. A new screed then was given a heat-reflecting coating.
Integrated photovoltaic panels of their first kind used in public buildings were installed to face the south of Malta. VRF air-conditioning systems which are more efficient were also installed. A Building Management System (BMS) is to operate an energy management system for all services resulting in a reduction of energy use.
With these changes in the building, Project House energy performance rating rose from Class D in 2013 to Class A in 2022.
Project House serves as a central building to the Public Works Department where it hosts architectural and engineering officials and professionals.
This investment costed more than €4 million thanks to the European Recovery and Resilience Funds.
