New fleet of Electric vehicles for the Public Service

Date 05.06.2024
Time 5 mins

During the Public Service Expo 2024, on the 15th May 2024, a new fleet of 250 electric vehicles was launched for the Public Service. These will eliminate more than 370 traditional vehicles from Maltese roads powered by diesel or fuel.

This fleet was launched by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said that this launch goes hand in hand with what the Government is doing in the environmental sector so that our country will reach its targets and be carbon neutral. He mentioned various schemes aimed at the Maltese and Gozitan families investing in renewable energy and also listed the main projects implemented by the Government, including the shore-to-ship project which is reducing 90% of air pollution in the Grand Harbour area. “In a similar way we are carrying out another project at the Freeport to continue reducing emissions into the air,” said the Prime Minister.

Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana said that this launch is not the point of arrival but is another step in a comprehensive strategy for the public administration to be more ambitious in its environmental targets. In recent months, the Public Service has worked towards eliminating emissions from air through clean vehicles, as promised in the Government's manifesto.

The Head of Public Administration Tony Sultana concluded by saying that the Public Service is not only looking to always improve its services to all clients but also to contribute to our country's commitments linked to the United Nations' sustainable development goals. This is by further reducing the impact of our operations on ecology.
