The MEMORJA project was established as the oral and audio-visual archive of the National Archives in 2017. The mission in this project is to record stories of the lives of people and groups who have had low representation in the country’s documented history.
MEMORJA uses advanced methods in oral history, ethnography and archives to collect, record, preserve and make accessible the individual and collective stories that have been delivered to us orally and via audio and video. The project seeks a diversity of memories, biographical stories, community experiences and historical events of the Maltese people.
Trained in oral history, the workers and volunteers of the MEMORJA project do ongoing ethnographic work in the community, enriching our archives with memories and souvenirs, personal photos, documents, ephemera, objects, audio, video and film footage that have been deposited and preserved. Their work is made accessible to all.
Oral history interviews, being conducted by our workers, help to increase the visibility of the National Archives and thus generate more friendships and a unique relationship of trust between the National Archives and the public.
