It's not the first time we've heard of the 'government garage', but what is it really?
The government garage can be considered as the main source of services and manufacturing for the Public Service, and falls under the responsibility of the Department of Public Works. It is made up of several sections that include carpenters, blacksmiths, plumbers, electricians, mechanics, sprayers and panel beaters among other officers.
The work of carpenters consists in the manufacture, fitting and maintenance of wooden work. These include apertures of public buildings, outdoor furniture in gardens, public spaces and historic buildings, and even office furniture.
Blacksmiths are responsible for iron works and structures, while also taking care of erecting poles and flags for state visits and public holidays, as requested by the Prime Minister's Office.
Installation and repair of water systems in various Ministries and Government Departments and in public places (latrines and irrigation systems) is also done by the plumbers of the Government Garage. While similar work on electrical systems is carried out by the electricians.
Specialized workers also manufacture and install aluminum work such as apertures, railings, ceilings and even parquet.
The government garage is also responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic, pelican and belisha lights, while it has the responsibility of fitting, repair and maintenance of air conditioners in various Ministries, Departments of Government, health centers and nursing homes.
The work does not stop there. The hundreds of fountains and 'water features' in public spaces will need regular cleaning and maintenance, and repairs in case of damage. This work is also done by public works workers in the government garage.
In addition, a number of mechanics and panel beaters take care of the repair and maintenance of cars, vans, trucks and vehicles of the Department of Public Works.
For all this work, the Directorate for Services and Manufacturing has around 250 workers, spread over all grades ranging from general hands, operatives, tradesmen, office workers, technical officers and engineers.
