Gozo’s Public Transport Service Now Fully Electric Following €11 Million Investment
Easter remains one of the most significant moments in Gozo’s cultural and religious calendar, bringing together faith, tradition, and community spirit. Each year, the island hosts a diverse programme of events that combines centuries-old religious practices with cultural initiatives and family-oriented activities.
At the heart of these celebrations are the solemn observances of Holy Week, particularly the Good Friday processions held across various villages. Life-sized statues depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ are carried through the streets by dedicated volunteers, accompanied by participants in biblical attire and symbolic elements reflecting Christ’s suffering. In some cases, penitents carrying chains and crosses add to the tradition, while funeral marches performed by local bands create a deeply reflective atmosphere.
Throughout the period, churches and village squares are illuminated with candlelight, offering a serene setting for prayer and reflection. Cultural activities such as live re-enactments, theatrical productions, art exhibitions, and sacred music concerts further enrich the programme, alongside events like Lejl Imkebbes in the Cittadella and the Gaulitana Festival of Music.
While Good Friday is marked by solemnity, Easter Sunday brings a vibrant transformation. Celebrations of the Resurrection are accompanied by festive Masses, band marches, and the traditional l-Irxoxt procession, symbolising the triumph of life over death.
These celebrations are made possible through the collective efforts of local communities, volunteers, and public service entities, ensuring that Easter in Gozo remains a living expression of heritage and identity.
