Malta Maintains Top Position in Europe for Digital Government Services
Public transport in Malta will continue to be strengthened through a €14 million investment with 40 new electric Tallinja buses. This initiative forms part of the Malta in Motion plan, which is driving the shift towards a more modern, sustainable and efficient mobility system.
The new vehicles will further expand Tallinja’s electric fleet and support the aim of having a fully electric public transport fleet in Gozo.
At the same time, a pilot project for an autonomous electric shuttle was also announced. This is being carried out through a collaboration between the Ministry for Transport, Malta Public Transport and the University of Malta, with co-financing from the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.
The autonomous vehicle, which can carry up to 15 passengers, will be tested for at least six months on selected routes in Malta and Gozo. For safety purposes, a trained operator will be on board at all times and will be able to take control whenever necessary.
From this coming Sunday, new routes, extensions to existing routes and increased frequencies on popular services will also come into effect, making public transport more accessible, efficient and convenient.
This investment further strengthens the direction towards cleaner, more modern and more convenient public transport for the benefit of citizens.
