As the entity responsible for preserving the country’s natural capital and biodiversity, Ambjent Malta has an extensive marine remit. Ambjent Malta is working to restore and protect habitats within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) through the removal of litter from the seabed, floating and coastal clean-ups, as well as planned work aimed at protecting Posidonia oceanica, an important underwater plant that plays a vital role in supporting marine biodiversity.

These practical conservation measures help reduce the impact of waste on the marine environment and contribute towards maintaining coastal areas and underwater habitats in better condition. Underwater and coastal clean-ups form part of ongoing efforts to safeguard environmentally sensitive areas, while placing greater emphasis on the importance of maintaining healthy and protected marine ecosystems for the future.

Ambjent Malta’s work goes beyond physical interventions. The entity also carries out public awareness campaigns and works on the installation of informative signage near Marine Protected Areas, helping the public better understand the environmental value of these areas and the importance of protecting them.

Through close collaboration with the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), NGOs and local communities, Ambjent Malta continues to strengthen a coordinated approach towards marine conservation. This collaboration helps ensure that protecting the marine environment becomes a shared responsibility, bringing together conservation action, public awareness and community participation to safeguard Malta’s coastline, seas and marine biodiversity.
