Malta’s Energy Lifeline Restored as Interconnector Returns to Full Operation

Date 10.04.2026
Time 5 minutes

Malta has taken another strong step in securing its energy future, with the first interconnector (IC1) restored to full operation following planned works in Sicily.

This milestone reflects the Government’s continued investment in modern energy infrastructure, as preparations advance for the second interconnector (IC2) — a strategic project aimed at strengthening Malta’s energy resilience and sustainability.

The works required a temporary shutdown of IC1 to carry out essential upgrades. Despite this, the national grid remained stable and secure throughout, highlighting effective planning, coordination and delivery.

Led by Enemalta and Interconnect Malta, in collaboration with international partners, this project demonstrates Malta’s ongoing commitment to building a reliable, future-ready energy system that supports both families and businesses.
