Malta continues to register strong progress in waste management, building on the positive results achieved in recent years. Ongoing efforts by households and businesses are delivering tangible outcomes under the Long-Term Waste Management Plan.

Mixed waste has decreased by over 30%, falling from approximately 141 million kilogrammes to 95.5 million kilogrammes. At the same time, recyclable waste streams – including material collected through grey and green bags and glass – continue to show sustained improvement, even when accounting for private initiatives such as the Beverage Container Refund Scheme.

Organic waste separation has also increased steadily, reaching a record 30 million kilogrammes in 2025. These results reflect growing public awareness and active participation across Malta and Gozo.

Organic waste collected from businesses rose significantly, from 263,900 kilogrammes in 2022 to approximately 6.5 million kilogrammes last year. Recyclable waste from the sector increased from just over 1 million kilogrammes to nearly 4 million kilogrammes over the same period, while mixed waste recorded a modest decrease and is expected to continue declining.

Improved waste separation by households and businesses has resulted in the diversion of approximately 412 million kilogrammes of waste away from landfills over the past five years.

In 2025, all collected organic waste was converted into renewable energy and high-quality compost. This process generated 8.5 GWh of electricity – enough to power around 1,200 households for a year – while also supporting the agricultural sector. Recyclable outputs reached record levels, exceeding 23.5 million kilogrammes of materials such as gypsum, flat glass, and wood.
