One of the biggest pavilion projects in Europe - Discover the facilities you can find

Date 02.08.2024
Time 5 minutes

The Gozo Indoor Sports and Aquatic Pavilion is a state-of-the-art sport investment with three main objectives: to host a wide range of sport and aquatic disciplines, to serve as an ideal place for community training, competition, and events, and finally to serve as a foundation for local and international sporting activities to be held on the island of Gozo. This facility will ensure a comprehensive, inclusive and versatile environment for sports and recreation, with the aim of serving Gozo's diverse local community. Among other things, the facilities of this pavilion will strengthen the curriculum of the Gozo College, so much so, that during the scholastic year, students will have access to the highest-level sports facilities and programmes. In addition, the facility is also equipped to host international competitions. This facility will augment the Gozitan cultural exchange sector, from a sporting point of view. In order to achieve these ambitious targets, this project – spreading over 5,190 square metres at various levels – has been carefully planned in order to meet the highest standards of functionality and comfort. The planning and implementation of this project is a clear demonstration of the Ministry for Gozo and Planning's commitment to achieve the required goals of excellence, sustainability and even community involvement.

This pavilion is divided into three levels including these facilities:

  • An Olympic-sized swimming pool 50x25 meters compliant with FINA-rated standard, suitable for water polo and competitive swimming. This pool will have lanes of both 25m and 50m. Moreover, the facility will also include space for viewers;
  • Gymnastic hall equipped to support a range of disciplines;
  • Three professional squash courts for enthusiasts of this sport discipline;
  • Rooms and saunas for therapy and relaxation;
  • A multi-storey climbing wall which presents challenges for climbing enthusiasts of all levels;
  • A tranquil area dedicated to activities such as yoga and mindfulness;
  • Weight room with state-of-the-art fitness equipment for strength training;
  • Full size basketball room designed to host local and international games;
  • Multipurpose outdoor pitches. Two pitches for the purpose of competitive training and games in various sports disciplines, and another dedicated Pedal pitch; and
  • Area for billiards and table games.

Apart from this, the design of the facility will incorporate abundant natural light. This factor will reduce the need for the generation of artificial light; apart from improving the experience of whoever makes use of this pavilion. This is also complemented by natural ventilation with the aim of maintaining optimal air conditioning in the facility in an efficient manner.

Therefore, this project not only represents a significant investment in Gozo's physical and social infrastructure, but also reflects the Ministry's dedication to fostering a vibrant, strong and inclusive community. We look forward to the positive impact this facility will have on the island, promoting sporting excellence and well-being for the years to come.
