A LARGE NUMBER OF HIGH-QUALITY SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY

Date 07.09.2022
Time 5 minutes

servizz.gov, together with Active Ageing and Community Care, offers a large number of services for the best well-being and quality of life for the elderly. These services transform the older generation from dependency to active ageing, in order to give independence and dignity in old age, as well as providing community care services to help older people to continue their lives in the environment in which they have grown.

Among the services provided there are:

1. Active Ageing Centres

At these centres, older people are offered opportunities to remain physically, mentally and socially active. The centres focus on lifelong learning. Older people can meet their peers and enjoy each other’s company. Each centre offers a diverse programme of activities including outings, educational talks, various games and a lifelong learning programme with a number of sessions. The centres are not only a place where one whiles away the time, but also where one learns and shares one’s abilities with others.

2. Home Help Service

The Home Help Service offers assistance to elderly and disabled people in daily domestic work and purchases. Once the application is approved, a supervisor from Home Help contacts applicants to arrange a home visit. During this visit, the supervisor provides detailed information on this service.

3. Respite at Home

The purpose of the Respite Service in the Home is to provide a few days of rest to people who care for their elderly at home. The Respite service in the Home provides company, socialisation and/or personal care at the residence of the elderly. Personal care includes helping the elderly to wash, dress, eat and other personal needs.

4. Handyman Service

The Handyman Service is aimed at assisting elderly and people with special needs so that they can live as independently as possible at their own residence. This service offers several maintenance tasks at the applicant’s residence. These include carpentry services, renovation, plumbing, electricity, installation of handrails and the carrying of items from one room to another.

5. Telecare+

The aim of this service is to give reassurance to elderly people, carers and their relatives when assistance is needed in the home of the elderly. This service therefore encourages the elderly to continue to live in their homes and in the community.

6. Telephone Rent Rebate

This service offers a discount on the rental of the telephone line at the applicant’s residence, which is received every two months. This service is aimed only at older people who have a telephony service with the company GO plc. There are no discounts on calls made by the applicant.

7. Meals on Wheels

The aim of the Meals on Wheels service is to support the elderly and other people living in their home who cannot prepare their own meals. The service delivers a cold meal every day, so that the food is consumed at the customer’s preferred time. It should be ensured that food is heated before consumption. The menu offers a variety of meals for 7 consecutive days. Each daily meal consists of a starter, a main course and dessert.

8. Continence Service

The Continence Service is aimed at alleviating psychological problems which the elderly may encounter due to bladder or bowel problems resulting in incontinence. The aim of this service is to provide financial support to these older people by providing continence products that are partially or fully subsidised.

9. Domiciliary Nursing

The Domiciliary Nursing is aimed at providing a nursing service or home medical assistance. This community-based service caters for the customer’s needs in a personal and holistic way, where a case management method is used. This is achieved by involving all members of the team and involving professionals and other bodies where necessary. This service may also be used with other health and social services that are needed in each community.

10. Domiciliary Caring

The Domiciliary Caring Service is aimed at providing medical assistance at home. This community-based service is coordinated by the CommCare team and caters for customer needs in a personal and holistic way, where a case management method is used. This is achieved by involving all members of the team and involving professionals and other bodies where necessary. This service can also be used with other health and social services that are needed in each community. It is important that every customer is assessed by a CommCare professional in order to ensure that the service is provided to those who actually need it.

11. Carer at Home Scheme

The aim of the Carer at Home Scheme is to provide another service in the community. Through this scheme, the Government grants financial support to older people who employ a carer of their choice to meet their daily needs. The Carer at Home Scheme is offered both in Malta and in Gozo.

12. Dementia Activity Centres

The Dementia Centres (PCCs) provide day and night care in various localities in Malta and Gozo. These centres are specifically designed to meet the needs of people living with dementia. Centres for people with dementia provide relief, support and alleviation of the burden on families, while also providing therapeutic activities to people with dementia.

13. Social Work

The aim of the Social Work Service is to provide emotional support, guidance and assistance to the elderly so that they can continue to live an active life in the community. This service deals with social work cases, provides support to clients, facilitates the management of personal assistance, action plans, crisis intervention, Home Help Service assessment, and coordination with geriatric hospitals and rehabilitation hospitals.

14. Night Shelter

The aim of the Night Shelter Service is to offer overnight shelter to elderly people living alone or who, for various reasons, feel insecure at home. There are a number of night shelters in both Malta and Gozo. This service is offered by Active Ageing and Community Care together with other entities.

15. Home Admission

Homes for the Elderly provide a residential care service in a safe and secure environment for the elderly and persons with disabilities, who can no longer live independently in their home.

16. Community Geriatrician

The Community Geriatrician Service provides access to elderly people who cannot leave their homes because of physical health problems, in order to obtain comprehensive geriatric assessments. This is achieved by conducting medical home visits in the community with professionals from the CommCare Assessment Division.

17. Podiatry Service

The Podiatry Service is intended to evaluate, diagnose and treat elderly conditions related to the foot and lower body. The podiatrist, who forms part of the Allied Health Professionals team, offers a service of various treatments for the care of the feet, such as skin problems (e.g. warts, clots and blisters), nail problems (e.g. discoloured or raised nails); foot and ankle damage; diabetes-related complications in the legs or difficulty when walking.

18. Physiotherapy Service

The Physiotherapy Service is aimed at helping the elderly reach their maximum potential so that they can enjoy life more independently. The physiotherapist, who forms part of the Allied Health Professionals team, provides advice/training on therapy and rehabilitation to deal with mobility problems.

19. Occupational Therapy Service

The Occupational Therapy Service promotes the health and well-being of the elderly through occupation. The main purpose of this service is to enable older people to participate in activities of everyday life. This result is achieved by working with the elderly and communities to improve their ability to enter the occupations they want or need, or by modifying the environment to better support their occupations.

Detailed information on each service is obtained from Freephone 153.
