A Comprehensive Refurbishment of Floriana Elderly Home

Date 06.09.2024
Time 5 minutes

Dar il-Mistrieħ or as it is better known, Floriana Home, has been a sanctuary of care and support for older persons for over 35 years. With the growing needs of our ageing population, Active Ageing and Community Care is committed in enhancing the quality of life for older persons, ensuring they continue to live with dignity and independence. Recognising the urgent need for modernisation, Floriana Home has undergone significant refurbishment to meet and exceed the contemporary standards required for residential care.

Established in 1987, the Floriana Home, which is especially sought after by Valletta and Floriana residents, became a cornerstone of care and support for older adults. Despite its important function, the facility has only been minimally renovated once during 1999. The deteriorating infrastructure and the urgent need to update it with the Older Persons Standard Authority (OPSA) guidelines led to this comprehensive renovation. This project was not only aimed at addressing infrastructural challenges but also at strengthening the Floriana Home as a safe environment, improving significantly the residents’ well-being. Due to its state as the smallest of all government residential homes, the Floriana Home was in an advantageous position to undergo extensive renovation. This renovation was not easy because we tried to keep as many residents as possible within the same home to reduce the inconvenience of relocation.

This project, which falls under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Active Ageing, was possible thanks to the human resources of Active Ageing and Community Care and the help of funds provided by the Welfare Committee. With a budget of €828,000 this investment underlines a strong commitment to reach the highest standards of care, comfort, and dignity for residents. The completion of this renovation marks a significant milestone for the Floriana Home, the residents, and employees.

The renovation included full reinforcement from infrastructure to amenities, ensuring that every aspect of the home met the highest standard. Among the important targets achieved was the renovation of the level below the home in 2021, which improved the facilities for workers and amenities for residents. The scope of the works extended to comprehensive changes across the facility including:

  • Introduction of a modern air-conditioning system;
  • Waterproofing;
  • Full renovation of common bathrooms and en-suites in residents' rooms;
  • Plastering and painting;
  • Room furniture;
  • New chairs and tables;
  • Reception and nursing stations with new furniture;
  • New doors and apertures;
  • Kitchen with new furniture;
  • Curtains, dividers and bed covers;
  • Soffits and modern lighting;
  • Vinyl floor all over the house;
  • Hair salon;
  • Improving accessibility such as handrails in common areas.
  • Among the most notable improvements is the introduction of a multidisciplinary clinic, equipped with specialised medical equipment. This facility ensures that all residents receive holistic and personalised care in a private and dignified environment.
