On World Organ Donation Day, more people were encouraged to register as organ donors, highlighting that a single donor can help save up to eight lives.

During a meeting with transplant recipients, registered donors and families of organ donors, attention was drawn to the challenges faced by patients waiting for a transplant. In 2024, 8,591 patients across Europe died while awaiting an organ transplant, reinforcing the importance of increasing the number of registered donors.

Families of deceased donors also shared their experiences, including the support they received from hospital staff and the sense of pride in knowing that their loved ones had helped save other lives.

Registering as an organ donor today can help save lives in the future and leave a lasting legacy for others.

Malta’s National Human Organ and Tissue Donation Register, established in 2016 and managed by the Superintendence of Public Health, currently includes 30,548 registered organ donors. Over the past two and a half years, more than 2,410 people have joined the register following several awareness initiatives.

Registration has recently been made easier through organdonation.gov.mt, where individuals can register securely in just a few minutes using their e-ID.
